53 Giving is a privilege.

*note: post filled with words and the lack of photos. Most of the photos here are koped from google images so credits go to respective photographers
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Haven't written anything here in the longest time ever, but just to update As has been over for nearly one whole month. I've been wanting to record down certain events such as Prom and how I spent my last few days in Singapore but I felt too lazy too. I realized that the key to blogging is to write down your thoughts and feelings right after the event, when everything is still fresh in your mind. And today I'll write about volunteering with Kechara to give out food to the homelessness.

Throughout my nearly 4 whole years of volunteering, I've worked the most with kids. When saying that teenagers nowadays tend to have a preference to work with younger kids, I do agree that I myself have the tendency to do so. Ever since working with SYFC, Interact and even the special events I've participated in, more than half involved in interacting with kids. Today, after discussion with my pal Adrian, we decided to head down to a soup kitchen.

In European countries, soup kitchens have existed as early as in the Middle Age. They were mainly organised by the Church to serve the poor free hot soup and bread. Therefore, they were called "soup kitchens".Soup kitchens in Malaysia serve rice and not soup due to eating habit and cultural differences. Only vegetarian lunch boxes, halal lunch boxes, and pork-free or beef lunch boxes are serve to respect the diverse religious and racial backgrounds of the needy. At KSK, they serve vegetarian dinners around midnight, because the "clients" will appear around this hour in fixed areas, facilitating the distribution of food. Every week, the kind souls in KSK will go around calculating how many packs of food is required and then make reservations - this food normally sponsored by the kind folks such as AmBank, Le Meridien Hotel etc

A bit of background first, Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) is by a Buddhist organization but the soup kitchen service is open to all regardless of race, gender and background. Due to various circumstances, we (A and I) were like 40 minutes late for the Orientation briefing that was supposed to start at 8, but I can safely say I didn't miss much as I still managed to listen to the introduction/aim/purpose/things to take note? But from other blogposts I see they had volunteers to help distribute the food into different packs so you might want to participate in that. Also, in KSK we do Saturday midnight rounds so be prepared to go home late? It starts at 9.30pm and ends around midnight.. but don't worry there are tons of nice people around :)

There were tons of things to take note - how to react in certain situations and things we should do. Even though it might sound a bit novice, but the point that you should never ask anyone "Sorry uncle, are you homeless?" was very appropriately pointed out.  Even though I hate to admit this, but some humans have a tendency to ask way inappropriate questions. This is very important in volunteering as sometimes we overlook others' pride and dignity, hurting them in the process. They might be ashamed of their present surroundings and hide too!  Another thing to mention is that I find it extremely horrible that people do take photos during such acts because I find it disrespectful to those people who already need to muster so much courage to collect that packet of food from you just because they need to survive.

I find that the most important thing when volunteering is sincerity, 将心比心, to put yourselves in their shoes and connect with them. With every smile, every kind gesture, you gain trust and respect, which I think is the basis of all relationships. And in KSK, food is a way to communicate and reach out to these people living in the streets. Only by being friends and knowing the background story only can you help the person yes no?

We were separated into different teams (with an experienced team leader and a few other teammates) to bring food packets+mineral water+fruits+bread to different locations in KL (there are teams who head down to PJ on Sundays and on weekdays to squatters - I still can't believe KL has squatters..). Our location was.. the area opposite Central Market, nearby Pudu Bus Terminal. A whole night of distributing food on the roadside whilst seeing large numbers of cars travel in and out of the CBD (Central Business District) was a very enriching and unique experience. I've definitely learnt about homelessness under Human Geog, about the sub-standard housing in New York to overcrowding in Hong Kong, but it was really different seeing it in real life.

When we arrived (in cars), huge number of overly eager homeless people waiting by the usual distribution spot stood up and formed a line according to instructions to get their complete "meal set". Amongst them were people of different race, gender, clothing.. and I must say that I got a bit skeptical. Whilst I was more than eager to help, how some of them approached us as if it was their rights to get food from us was really.. appalling to me. It reminded me of some of the kids I used to work with, that it was perfectly reasonable to them to have us there to aid them in doing work. Something more shocking was that these homeless people surface in the middle of the night, in the hustle and bustle of the modern city. My primary school is situated nearby, but I have never seen such massive numbers of people needing help. We're talking about hundreds of people in one area, I can't help but to think how many more people who are left out of aid.

Whilst we traveled around, A even recognized a family that he previously served in another area. The family was joking around asking for additional packets without shame (I don't know if I should use those word) and I couldn't help but to think that this might just be a short term solution as people get reliant on such aid. Our team leader, Uncle Wong, shed a different light on this matter though. Even though there might be people running to different areas to get food, probably depriving others of one portion, we give and take, because we only mean well, and only they can help themselves out of this. Uncle Wong shared the experiences he had undergone, such as how safety first is the key to volunteering because we are unsure of the actions others may give - they might not reciprocate, and probably even assaulting you - well KL probably isn't the safest place in the world anyway.

He shared with us stories about clients he met, how sometimes they were forced out of their homes due to inability to pay or being kicked out of the family. Behind every body lying on the streets is probably a painful story. You can never determine if someone is homeless based on appearance, which is why we should not discriminate. Most of these people have no choice but to sleep on cardboard boxes in bus stops/shelters, and the only full meal they have in the week might just be that packet of rice. It's a very saddening thought that some of these less fortunate people are out there due to a series of unfortunate events. Each of them looked to thin like bones with skin ):

I agree with Uncle W's view that homelessness would only increase in the years to come, which will definitely bring additional number of social problems. With massive price hikes thanks to our ever so fabulous government next year, this problem will only worsen. Why is the government doing whatever transformation of the country in the expense of the people, I do not understand. I only know that I can help these people with the small acts of kindness. I find it really saddening that money is in fact of most crucial importance in this world, and that I, a 18yo unemployed kiddo for the moment can only do this bit to help. That being said, please DO NOT GIVE CASH TO HOMELESS PEOPLE because they will flock to get money from you. Remember, safety first when volunteering.

- I had so much I wanted to say now I have no idea what I have not said, so pardon me -

Like how Kechara puts it, Giving is a privilege.

Often we tend to forget how fortunate we are, to have a shelter above our heads, to not need to worry about having three meals when some people can't even afford one. Considering that we're the lucky ones, maybe contributing back to the society seems te most reasonable thing to do - to me at least. I haven't felt this happy in such a long while, because I find volunteering gives me a purpose in the actions I do, it gives me a reason in life! Even though things are becoming  tougher, I do hope more people stand up to provide financial support and contribute physically, to find the joy and meaning in giving back.

There are many more organizations who work to help these people to get off the streets, namely
Kechara Soup Kitchen
Pertiwi Soup Kitchen
Reach Out

Personally I think it's a really meaningful way to help those left behind in the society, so I really encourage each and everyone of you reading this post to go and give it a try. Even in Singapore, soup kitchens are exciting and different from the usual volunteer work we have. But for those planning to drop by KL, I think participating in such a humbling experience would be one of those more memorable moments than shopping in Pavilion. For my Singaporean friends who would like to go through such an experience like I did, do give me a ring, we go together ok ahhaha!
I didn't get to interact much with the clients today, but to get a clearer picture of the experience, here are other volunteer's recounts:
http://legallytouched.blogspot.com/2013/06/kechara-soup-kitchen-8th-june-2013.html

I'll end off with this conversation I saw on Tim's blog (the first link right under recounts).

That night, before I went to bed I asked Shorty:
“Aren’t we so lucky that we get to sleep on our nice beds in a safe air-conditioned room?”

She replied:
“You know what scares me? At one point of their lives…. they probably had this luxury too”.
Sets off a lot of alarms huh?  I think that's scary too.

47 PAUL x True Love

Post Prelims is good :) No more stress (for the moment) and maybe getting to chillax just a bit before I continue my coffeeaddict-studyeveryday cycle. Since I'm a bit sick so I decided to forgo my KFC (still on a quest to find the BEST fried chicken, any recos? BTW KFC student meal runs daily regardless of weekdays/weekends and 2 piece chicken + mash potato + a drink for $5 is a steal ^^)

Anyways, ever since my super nice senior/gor KELVIN FAN (okay honorary mention aren't you honoured) bought this for me earlier this year I have been in love! I'm not a very fruit tart person - not a fan of custard (I think that's the base beneath all the fruits) but this is DELISH. The fruits for one, were really fresh, and really sweet - not because of the glaze, but rather the good picking of fruits.

The crust, was not too thick, but very firm. I think it's really hard to eat this because the fruits are so nicely arranged on top and that with every bite you will actually affect the "equilibrium" of the tart and fruits might topple to one side hahaha. I gave up using a fork so I used my hands - and with every bite it  gives me enough crust + custard + fruit ratio so I am happy (or rather my biting skills are superb maybe?) The crust isn't too buttery or flaky - some might find it too dry but hey that's what a tart base is supposed to do rightt?

Here are some photos of PAULs:
(Some photos taken by me, others are creditted below - meh my phone was at 7% battery level so ):)

Yeap they sell bread too. But after reading the comments section on ladyironchef, I would suggest you not to buy the bread because readers say it is stale and pricey? Maybe that explains why there were so much bread when I went there (around 9pm on a Wednesday night)

WHOOHOO FRUIT TARTS *~*

If you would like to read some more "professional" reviews, head on to danielfooddiary or ladyironchef. There seems to be not many reviews about it but generally: get the take out and enjoy it at home, apparently service sucks, it isn't just bad but it's really really bad ._.

Been crazy in love with the catchy tune of this song PLUS the lyrics that are just so true!! It's like.. love is a  love hate thing no? You just accept the flaws of the other person hehe. (Maybe I've been affected by all the boyfriend-criteria posts online recently >_>)

And I guess this is what I think love is.. like the song, very comfy and soothing and it's omnipresent! HAHA Okay little girl's rubbish fantasty, but really 温温的感觉很美好 ^~^ How he makes you feel loved all the time - not the obsessive type that you gotta spend a lot a lot of time but that you both trust each other enough and you're comfortable around each other's presence :)

OKAY HAHA OFF TO DO WORK AFTER MUCH RUBBISH RAMBLINGS. CAN'T WAIT FOR FRIDAY.. Then after that the mug life again ;_;

33 Bearpaws: Blind spots

There's been a lot of Russian people checking out my blog recently, should I be concerned haha? No offense hehheh, hello there friendly people :) There's been a long weekend after my tests and I managed to take the time off to destress (for once I really believe that shopping helps to destress...)

I know most teenagers of my age will already know that shopping = bugis/far east, but here I would like to offer two cents worth.. what else to spot out for in these places :) And hence, BEARPAWS is born! It's basically just.. signifying that the bear is walking about heh. Bear prints sounds a bit stupid, bear steps too. So let's settle with Bearpaws haha ;)

You'll probably have an idea of how that looks like if you're local, but if you're a foreign reader, this is how Bugis Street looks like: (yes the hustle and bustle is all day long, not sure about the jaywalking ahha)

It's the biggest shopping market in Singapore, and in my opinion, sells the cheapest and provides most variety of clothes :) From food, shoes, shirts, skirts to prom dresses, skin care, mobile accessories.. I think you name it they probably have it :O If you're interested to know more, a famous Singaporean blogger Sophie has blogged Bugis Street at http://sophiewillocq.blogspot.sg/2012/10/bugis-street.html! Take a look!

Anyways, what I found was really worth a mention in Bugis, other than the really discounted prices of shoes (yes Anna Nucci flats for $9.90 is definitely a catch!) and clothes (I got a off shoulder top and pencil skirt for only $20 heh), I found that these adorable things should be given more attention!!

A shop on Level 3 of Bugis Street. My heart melted when I saw the giraffe!!!!
Craftholic plushies which are very popular are also sold there at discounted prices!
Shop on Level 1. Pretty hard to find because it's more secluded, but hey haha it's near the Anna Nucci shop if you're wondering where to find it :) They sell uhm.. bunny jumpers and panda/monkey/bear caps like the one shown below...
Anyways, here's my catch of the day from Bugis, a $17 authentic Anna Sui wallet :) Mine was already tearing apart and I found this wallet was minimalist, whilst not losing its classy and elegant touch heh.

My other catch was this:
I swear that I <3 Taimei is the best bubble tea I've had so far!

It's more milky than KOI maybe, not too sweet for my liking and for me it's just a very nice mixture of milk tea and pearls :) They are also known for their exorbitant prices when selling snacks too (despite the very very positive feedback that says it's really really nice) This is their menu, think that it's really punny that they named their combos after popular Taiwan artistes heehee.

If you haven't tried Taimei, YOU SHOULD!!
There's really no reason you shouldn't try since KOI and Gongcha prolly charge you the same anyway,
maybe it's more inconvenient because it's only found in Bugis (2 outlets) and Raffles Place.
BUT, if you're around Bugis do head down to try :)

I dropped by for lunch at Hot Tomato Express at Plaza Sing, and the place looks like this.. just with so many more people since it's lunch hour. It's pretty spacious even though it's merely a small lot :)

What caught my eye for Hot Tomato was the student meal (HAHAHA #aunty). The meal comprised of a "Chicken Chop N Aglio Olio" OR "Sirloin Steak N Aglio Olio" or "Dory Fish N Chips" + free flow drinks for $9.50. In my opinion, the Chicken Chop N Aglio Olio was $8.50, and so.. unless you're gonna sit there and talk to your friend or just chill, maybe the set is more worth it? I haven't got to compare the portion of the student meal and the main course portion, but my opinion is that student meal size for most restaurants are smaller. Correct me if I'm wrong ><

My Chicken Chop "N" Aglio Olio :)

To be honest, I really wasn't expecting it to be like.. extraordinary or something. It just feels like normal pasta and chicken to me right? Well.. I was wrong, the spaghetti was very nicely cooked with the spice it gave out a really nice aroma, it wasn't too dry or too wet either. The chicken was tender and really juicy.
I thought the only improvement was that they could try to blend the two flavours more..
In other words, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for you to try out this restaurant :)
When I ran a google search, I was like *drooooool* over all the good food photos.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Side note, is anyone interested to collaborate to come up with a list of good and affordable dining places for students? So far the only list is http://www.hungrygowhere.com/dining-guide/best-and-top/5-student-friendly-cafes-in-singapore-*aid-b75d3f00/ and I think much more can be done, for a huge collaboration to find out where do you have the best student deals :)
Leave a comment below the post or tweet me @fuzzycuddlybear :)

Normally when people talk about Far East Plaza, it's probably just about clothes/doing hair/ finding cheap mobile accessories or something. Maybe you can check out these places instead!
i. the burger bar
I actually have never tried the burgers here personally, but there has been a long list of good reviews.
I'm merely highlighting this place because it is one of the few outlets that sells The Tiramisu Hero,
I will be doing a review on it in a later blog post :)
ii. Chippy
HAHA Wtf when I typed^ I typed "Chirpys" haha I bet the boss will feel so offended.
The only thing I know that Chippy is damn good for it's their FRIED MARS BALLS
Sounds sinful right?  You can top up ice cream too! Super delish ;)

Anyways, the one reason I sometimes come to Far East Plaza is this place! It's right near the steps near 7-eleven on Basement 1, and it's quite authentic I suppose, the shop keeper is Korean :)

Rows of interesting Korean chips.. Hmm I wonder if they are Kimchi flavoured haha!
PEPERO that has been highly demanded recently.
Is it cause of the Monday couples' Pepero challenge? Hmm.
HAHAH I took this just to show you that there are so many  different brands of seaweed you can choose from!
But I don't know what's the seaweed for luh, I think you'll only drown yourself in seaweed eating all these heh
For anyone who wants to make their own Korean pancakes at home :)

HAHHA Freaking love Korean cutlery please. The bowl quite kawaii ^~^
And I love the flat spoon and chopsticks! Tempted to buy it home but I know I'll get whacked for spending unnecessary money T_T But there's a lot of other random stuff there.. like the Bibimbap stone bowl! :D

What's a Korean supermarket without KOREAN CUPNOODLES?
Shin ramen (the one on the right) is my favourite despite all the claims that it has plastic etc heh.

They sell a lot of drinks.. with unknown labels. But I always come here to buy limited edition Cokes produced in Korea for my cousin who collects the cans :)

OKAY WE'VE REACHED THE HIGHLIGHT.
THE REASON WHY I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH.
BECAUSE OF THIS!!

HAHA Yes this place sells Kimchi!! They are really STOCKED!
They also sell rice cakes in case you want to do it the Korean way :)
I used to come here to buy a pack of 100g Kimchi (costs me SGD 2.00),
really nice especially when you're watching Running Man HAHAHAAHA

Well, this place also taught me that there are 2 types of Kimchi:
There's Ganna Kimchi (left) and Jung An Kimchi (right)
LOL I won't even bother asking y'all to guess because it's really hard to differentiate (don't tell me it's the packaging omg I also can see right -_-)

Basically, Ganna Kimchi is more fresh because it's made locally and Jung An Kimchi is made in Korea. And it's because of this, Jung An Kimchi is more sour than the normal ones we eat in Singapore because Koreans like sour food heh. And I normally stick to Ganna because I'm not really a fan of sour stuff.

So here I conclude my post telling you about some blind spots you probably would have never noticed heh. Again, if you're interested in collaborating for the mini project, feel free to contact me ^~^ Hope this post wasn't too wordy and that you guys enjoyed the first post of Bearpaws! :)
